Election Summary

The 2024 Botswana general elections brought significant political activity and developments. The 12th Parliament was dissolved on September 05, 2024, by President Mokgweetsi Masisi under Section 91(2) of the Constitution, to pave the way for elections, marking a pivotal moment in ensuring democratic continuity. This dissolution also led to notable constituency boundary adjustments and administrative preparations to accommodate changes since the 2019 elections. For example, updated population data influenced constituency alignments, aiming to balance representation across regions. The Presidential Nominations, held under Section 7(1) on September 28, 2024, saw major parties nominating candidates for the highest office. Botswana had five political parties competing prominently: the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF), Botswana Congress Party (BCP), and a newcomer, the Botswana Republican Party (BRP) and Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD). The only parties whose presidential candidates were vetted were BCP,BDP,UDC and BPF. Alongside these parties, the elections attracted 198 independent candidates, reflecting growing political engagement outside traditional party structures. However, only 26 independent candidates vied for parliamentary positions, signaling continued dominance by party-affiliated candidates. Issues like youth unemployment, economic diversification, and governance reforms shaped campaigns, with the ruling BDP emphasizing economic growth and opposition parties like UDC and BPF focusing on accountability and inclusivity. The election day, October 30, 2024, saw high voter turnout, a hallmark of Botswana’s participatory democracy, underscoring the nation’s commitment to its democratic ideals.
